Tattoo Aftercare – Ink City Tattoo Denver

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its quality for years to come. At Ink City Tattoo Denver, we’re committed to helping you care for your new tattoo, whether you’re using Saniderm Aftercare or following a more traditional aftercare routine. Follow the instructions below to promote healing and protect your tattoo.

Saniderm Aftercare Instructions

1. Keep the Saniderm On:

  • Leave the Saniderm bandage on for 4–6 days. During this time, your tattoo will “weep,” and the bandage will fill with plasma mixed with excess pigment. This is completely normal, so don’t panic.
  • Saniderm is breathable and waterproof, so you don’t need to worry about getting it wet during showers.

2. Removing the Saniderm:

  • When it’s time to remove the Saniderm, do so in the shower with lukewarm water. Slowly and carefully peel off the bandage. If dead skin comes off with it, this is normal.
  • Avoid removing the bandage dry, as this can damage the healing tattoo.

3. Washing Your Tattoo:

  • After removing the Saniderm, gently wash your tattoo with antibacterial soap (e.g., Gold Dial) using your clean hands. Avoid using washcloths, loofahs, or anything abrasive.
  • Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel.

4. Moisturizing:

  • Apply a small amount of Aquaphor for the first application after removing the Saniderm. After that, switch to an unscented lotion (e.g., Aveeno or Jergens) as needed.
  • Avoid using oils, anti-itch creams, Neosporin, or additional applications of Aquaphor or A&D ointment after the initial use.

5. Ongoing Care:

  • Wash your tattoo twice daily and reapply unscented lotion as needed to keep the area moisturized but not greasy.
  • Do not re-wrap or re-bandage the tattoo after removing the Saniderm.

6. Important Notes:

  • Avoid scratching, picking, or applying anti-itch creams to the tattoo.
  • Keep the tattoo out of water (no baths, pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water) and avoid sun exposure or tanning beds during healing.
  • Avoid intense physical activities, excessive sweating, and tight clothing that could stick to the tattoo.

If the Saniderm comes off early or you experience any irritation, contact your artist for guidance.

Regular Aftercare Instructions

1. Bandage Removal:

  • Keep the bandage on for 1–2 hours after leaving the shop. Remove it and wash the tattoo gently with unscented, antibacterial soap using your clean hands.
  • Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.

2. Moisturizing:

  • For the first 24–48 hours, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or A&D ointment. Use just enough to cover the tattoo without buildup. If excess occurs, gently pat it away with a clean paper towel.
  • After the first 48 hours, switch to unscented lotion as needed to keep the tattoo hydrated.

3. Cleaning Routine:

  • Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily with unscented soap. Follow each wash with a light application of unscented lotion.

4. What to Avoid:

  • Do not use scented products, body washes, or shampoos near the tattoo.
  • Avoid submerging your tattoo in water — showers only for at least two weeks.
  • Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight during healing, and once healed, use high SPF sunscreen to maintain its vibrancy.

5. Clothing and Activity:

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to avoid rubbing or irritation.
  • Refrain from activities that cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area.

If you notice any unusual reactions or have concerns during the healing process, contact your artist for further guidance.
